Mae and Rhodes have long prayed for a child and when they find Opal, they are willing to risk anything to protect her, as their own. The infant is found with a mystical stone around her neck that would tell more of her past and future than anyone could have known. "It seemed to vibrate in her spirit like the stone played the strings of her heartThe story unfolds as a bewitching fantasy adventure which takes us deep into the dark, enchanting world of Fallmoon Gap; a long protected land inhabited by humans, protectorate wardons, and firehorses. Although it is protected by mysterious, it has been threatened by witches, wereboars, and feratus (an unusual vampire race). The fluid, fast-paced narrative exposes Opal’s innocent and strong willed character as she embodies the humble heroine. She stumbles through her destiny with the help of friends and surprising teachers. Eltheon, an elite wardon quickly became my favorite character of wise strength and humility. The author brings the story to life with such vivid details as every word entices the reader with unique descriptions such as, "The tobacco smoke hung between the women and the big house, and what they saw was distorted, but truer than what was actually visible."
I found myself clinging to every nuance of the richly written characters, through a range of emotions. The villains were wretched and invoked anger and disgust, while the delightful forces of good cracked my heart wide open. The last conflicts of the tale shocked, awed, and left me cringing with every turn. I am hoping there is another installment from this author.

I absolutely love this book! I feel like this novel has been different from any other fantasy novel I've read. I think it went a little deeper into real life issues and touched on themes of race, diversity, and class like no other fantasy novel I've seen has done. The author does a great job in telling the story, explaining the plot, bringing real life to the characters, and keeping the story moving. I loved this book and I can't wait to read more from this author.
My son and I read this book recently and both really loved the story and characters. The first book in what it is sure to be an exciting and popular series, Opal Summerfield and The Battle of Fallmoon Gap is the story of a teenage girl, Opal, who finds herself on an adventure of a lifetime. The Ozarks come alive in this tale as Opal is thrust into a world of magical creatures, not all good. She races toward her destiny as the reluctant hero in a battle against some evil forces. A very well-written, perfectly illustrated and enchanting book. Can't wait for the next installment.
“Opal Summerfield and the Battle of Fallmoon Gap” is a clever new addition to the young adult fantasy genre. There is little that this book doesn’t have—there is a menagerie worth of inventive magical creatures, a feisty female protagonist, evil magicians, a magical world that exists alongside ours (the Veil), and an epic battle of good vs. evil.
Richly imagined and painstakingly described, the story world in “Opal Summerfield and the Battle of Fallmoon Gap” is amazing. It is obvious that every detail in this novel –from Opal’s favorite brand of licorice to the description of the masks worn by the Hoods— was labored over to create a world that feels so magical and so real that you don’t want to leave it.
And while the author of “Opal Summerfield” could have been content to just let the book be a fun read—that wasn’t enough. Instead, there are a lot of valuable themes that emerge from the story—loss, racism, fitting in, self-reliance, courage (plus more).
This is a fantastic novel and I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.
First things first, what a GREAT STORY! I was hooked on Opal Summerfield from the first time she shot her slingshot ;) The story flowed right along, cruising from scene to scene and yet it still allowed me the time to get to know Opal and the craziness, and complexity, of her "new" world.
The environments and scenarios that Opal finds herself in are quite enchanting, and they are described very well as you will find out for yourselves during the book; author Mark Caldwell Jones can definitely set a scene! I see from other reviews written across the web, that the author resides from basically the same area, and you can feel that within his descriptions of the surroundings and landscapes within the book; it honestly felt like I was there with Opal and the other characters at some points (I say "other characters" because I don't want to *SPOIL* anything for you).
The story itself is well thought out and pretty darn DEEP ;) It happens to be the exact type of fantasy stuff that I am into, so I may be a tad partial to it ;) To me, there is nothing cooler than seeing the young kid, who is fairly average like you and me, REALIZE THAT GREATNESS IS WITHIN THEM and begin to rise up and gain the confidence needed to take on challenges needed to proceed! THOSE are the types of stories that I like, and this is one of them.
Mark Caldwell Jones did a solid job when he created little Opal Summerfield...
Two thumbs up...
Great read...
For teens or adults...
Ages 12 or 14+
This was a really fun read! Think Harry Potter in the Ozarks. The writing is very good, the story tumbles along at a great pace, and the characters are real and likeable. Although this is a children's book, it is rich enough, and the writing is compelling enough, to interest and entertain adults.
I was especially charmed by all the mythology of the Ozarks that Mark Caldwell Jones worked into the story. Jones is from the Ozarks, and his love of his home is apparent in the beautiful descriptions. It's a place I have never been, but now would really like to visit!
"Opal Summerfield and the Battle of Fallmoon Gap" was great entertainment. I'd suggest it for kid from 14 to 94!
