"I'm not staying here. I can't. . . . . . Besides, this is the last place in the world I'd want to stay."

Dreams were over-rated, especially when you were hanging onto the edge of a gully in Oklahoma's vast Indian Territory, fearing for your life. Leaving a comfortable home in order to prove one's artistic talent in a large city like Denver, Colorado now seems laughable. News flash! A vicious killer is on the loose and Hattie Walker is at his mercy, if she manages to survive the night. Traumatized by a stagecoach robbery and subsequent murders of all the occupants save herself, Hattie is further terrified when it is a group of Arapaho Indians who come to her rescue. But then that handsome lieutenant arrives.

Lieutenant Jack Hennessey cannot believe his eyes; the woman (once a childhood classmate) who has filled his dreams for years has re-appeared, providing him with the perfect opportunity to demonstrate heroism . . . . except that there was a slight twist in the translation. When Jack and Hattie leave the Arapahos and head towards Fort Reno, their lack of juvenile attachment will become the least of their worries.

"You have to find what God wants you to do, and He's got plans for me as well." Plans, plans, plans. Enjoy every disruption of plans that this book happily provides, it's a lovely continuation of the author's "Fort Reno Series".

The Lieutenant Bargain The Fort Reno Series Regina Jennings 9780764218941 Books Reviews

Childhood friends. An aspiring artist traveling by stagecoach to Denver through the untamed West. An Army lieutenant working with the Arapaho and Cheyenne to keep you he fragile peace and educate their children. What are the odds of their paths crossing?

Set at Christmas (which is why this story is on my reading list) the author weaves history, budding romance, and Christian themes is a lovely read.

“It wasn’t her fault. She hadn’t asked to be his ideal. He was the one who’d wronged her. He’d put the responsibility for his happiness on her, and that was a burden no mortal should bear.”
I have enjoyed Regina Jennings's books since the beginning, but this was definitely one of my favorites. Two strong-willed, yet vulnerable main characters make the reader realize that things are not always what they appear and just because someone seems to 'have it all together' doesn't mean that they do. Jennings included a rich history of the people around Fort Reno and now I can't wait to go out there and visit it myself! A great read-you won't be disappointed.
I really enjoyed this book and haven’t been disappointed by this author. I like how she thoroughly fleshes out her characters so that the reader understands them and their point of view. I love the author’s twist on history which she will reveal at the end in the author’s note. This twist permeates the story, and it wouldn’t be the same without it. I love Jack’s heart, his nerdy start, and his sometimes endearing cluelessness. I love how Hattie grows, becomes wise as the story progresses, and demonstrates her wisdom several chapters before the end. I enjoy the historical glimpse of the Arapaho and despite some bittersweet moments as they adapt to change, I like that the story doesn’t dwell on the bad. i love catching up with previous characters, and I will definitely read any future books in the series.
Jack Hennessey has pined for the girl back home ever since school days in Van Buren, Arkansas. Now, he focuses his time and energy on working with the Indian tribes and convincing them that sending their children to the mission school is a good thing. When he receives word that there's a survivor of a stagecoach robbery who's in the custody of the Arapaho, he heads out to help, never dreaming that the survivor would be none other than the girl from home.

Hattie Walker only wants to paint. After rejecting multiple marriage offers, her parents agree to send her to Denver with the stipulation that she must prove herself a successful artist or else she's to come home and settle down with a husband. Unfortunately, she is the lone survivor of a stagecoach robbery and finds herself all alone on the prairie - except for the Indians. When the cavalry officer comes to rescue her, she thinks she recognizes him, but not quite.

Jack simply wants to impress Hattie, even if she doesn't remember him. But, what he asks the Arapaho Chief to do and what actually happens become two different things and now Jack must figure out a solution - a bargain - to try to keep Hattie happy. But, will he ever be happy again?

What follows is a story filled with every possible emotion. What Hattie experiences with the robbery is terrifying, yet the author shows how God provided protection for Hattie. Then, after Hattie is rescued, I struggled to like her because she came across as very selfish, but her character development is wonderful. She went from an unlikeable spoiled brat to a caring, loving, mature woman. Jack's character starts out as a guy who is focused on appearances and proving himself. He grows into someone who is willing to sacrifice his passions and interests for the well-being of others. They both acknowledge their flaws and weaknesses and seek to improve and change to a better person.

In addition to the romance is a suspense story. There's the secondary story about the robbery - who was the criminal? Will he get caught? What happened to the gold? The answers unfold gradually and I was satisfied with the conclusion.

Finally, there's the story of the Indians. I appreciate the fact that the author is using real history to compose her story.

All in all, it's a solid story that flows very well from book 1 in the series. I loved following up with the other characters introduced in book 1 and I'm eager to read any future stories the author bases on Fort Reno.

Romance - PG
Language - Clean
Violence - non graphic
My rating - 5 stars.
